Ted Stewart

After a B.A. & B.Ed., Ted fell of the map for 15 years, teaching school in an isolated "fly-in" reserve along the coast of James Bay, in northern Ontario. This is where Ted was taught how to see nature.

Well known as a wildfowl sculptor, Ted's woodcarvings have won over 150 awards at competitions across Canada & in the U.S., including 1st place finishes in the advanced level at the World Wildfowl Carving Championships in Maryland. He has been featured in dozens of newspaper stories, in magazines & on an episode of Regional Contact (CTV Ottawa). In the summer of 2014 Ted was invited to be Artist in Residence at Pukaskwa National Park on Lake Superior. When not competing, Ted's expertise is now sought as a judge at various Ontario carving shows.

Flat art is a rather recent dimension added to this Newboro artist's repertoire. The canvas medium offers new possibilities - such as the ease of depicting a setting and establishing a mood. The seasons, weather conditions, geographical area, etc. can be difficult to portray in a wood sculpture.

Ted now lives, carves & paints in Newboro, a small village in Eastern Ontario, along the Rideau system (an Unesco World Heritage Site). He spends alot of time "in the field" doing archaeological work throughout Ontario, and observing & photographing birds, wildlife & their habitats .  He is a member of the Rideau Carvers & Rideau Lakes Artists Association.
